BRAIN TEASER: KARROND AND THE BIO-BOMB
A young horseman
named Karrond was travelling in the middle earth, looking for the great valley of life. When he arrived in a small city
of Villis, he saw the people busy preparing for the war. He looked around to talk to somebody but no one paid attention to
him. He continued walking to the core of the city until he met an old man.
"This is time for war my son. Why aren't you preparing for battle?", the old
man said. "I'm just a traveller. I'm here to look for the great valley of life. I have no intention of participating
in any war. I just wanted to cure my sister's sickness", Karrond replied.
"Well then", the old man said putting on his hat, "I will tell you where to find the great valley of life but you have
to do me a favor".
"What is it? Anything... I'll do anything just to find the great valley of life. I have a little time left. Please...
help me", Karrond said in a very low voice.
"You have to go to the mountain in the east of the King's castle and help us stop the ignition the
bio-bomb set by our enemies. It was installed near the stream of an oily, sweet-smelling liquid. All you have to do is to
add four liters of the sweet-smelling liquid to the igniter", the old man said.
"Fine, I can do it. It is not a difficult task", Karrond answered.
"Wait, the problem is... we have no 4-liter measuring device left here. Our enemies took all calibrated measuring
devices in this city to ensure their victory. We only have sixty minutes left before our city will be blown up by that
bomb. Here, take this bottles", the old man said handling Karrond two bottles. "The bigger bottle, when filled to the brim,
can hold five liters. The capacity of the small one is only three liters. Find ways to put exactly four liters of the liquid
to the igniter or else it will explode. Remember.... exactly four liters...... no more... no less!" Then the old man disappeard.
Karrond went to the mountain where the bomb was located. Now, he only have two bottles... one 5-L bottle and one
3-L bottle. How will Karrond solve the problem?
